In the Gospel of Luke (and all other gospels of course), it tells us about the friends of Jesus (Yeshua), who walked with him, talked with him and I guess did life with him. These company of people were Jesus' disciples. One story recently stood out to me as I was led to read it. Its in the Gospel of Luke 11 and especially verse 1:
"And it came to pass, that , as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples."
I've read this verse many times but often never really thought deeply about it as I would often skip over to the actual 'Model Prayer' that Jesus taught in Luke 1:2-4 (Mathew 6:9-13). But one day as the Lord graciously led me to this verse again and took me into a part of it that I had never seen before. And it is such a simple, yet deep place of 'wow' for me that I have come to love, enjoy and appreciate.
So what's this secret place you ask? Well simple, its in these words: "Lord teach us to pray". Just like the disciple asked Jesus this question in Luke 11:1. This was a friend of Jesus whom I'm sure was with Jesus constantly because he was Jesus' disciple right. So he had seen Jesus pray times before too right. But did you ever wonder why he would ask Jesus to 'Teach us to pray' at that 'particular moment' in time? I never really thought of it until this day when the Lord allowed his spirit of revelation to breathe fresh life into it for me. But here it is so simple, so deep but so simple.
The key nugget that the Lord was showing me at that moment is this:
"When you want to pray, whether for a situation, for someone, for your life or family, for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING (because remember we are to pray without ceasing 1 Thessalonians 5:17), even for your food every morning; whatever it is you are trying to pray for, STOP FOR JUST A SECOND AND ASK "LORD TEACH ME HOW TO PRAY!" Then WAIT for HIM to show YOU HOW! He will SHOW/TEACH you exactly how to pray in that MOMENT in time! Hey that's exactly what He did to the disciple who asked him right? In Luke 11:2 it says "AND HE SAID UNTO THEM'" which to me means right there and then he taught them how to pray at that specific moment in time. Jesus didn't say, "Yes I'll teach you how to pray tomorrow, or next year, or when you are ready, or when I am ready!" NO! Jesus instantly responded to the simple question "Lord, teach us to pray!"
See the key is so simple yet we come to God praying with words that come from OURSELVES most of the time. And other times, with petitions and requests that come from OURSELVES. And then other times with declarations and decrees that come from OURSELVES. And yet again other times we come with supplications that come from OURSELVES. See, most often times we may have some prayer formula or specific ways in which we pray. And while there is nothing wrong with that, how much more fun and relational would it be if we just paused for a second and ask the same question,' Lord, teach me to pray"? After all, we should be PRAYING his WILL and HIS KINGDOM right, and we won't know how to pray His Will and His Kingdom unless HE HIMSELF TEACHES and SHOWS US! And because he respects and loves us, he won't force it upon us unless we 'ASK' (Mathew 7:7). So when we ASK him to teach us to pray in any instance, in any case, in any moment in time, for any situation, for any circumstance, for anything and anyone and everything, then he will surely answer us and teach and show us HOW TO PRAY.
Trust me on this, since I found this key, there has been a shift. Prayer has become and is becoming 'UNION' with Yeshua! Prayer has become and is becoming UNION in Relationship as 'ONE'! As "I IN YOU AND YOU IN ME (Jesus' prayer in John 17:21,23). Come to think of it, prayer is no longer the prayer as I used to see and know it. It really is 'ONENESS' with YAHWEH! Speaking 'ONE' language, in UNION, hidden with Christ and IN GOD! WOWWWW! Hallellujah!!!
So what does this look like you ask? Well why tell you when you can just try it out yourself. Right now just close your eyes and think of something you have been praying for or that you would like to pray for. Maybe its a person or a situation or even yourself. Then instead of starting to pray for it, just take a minute and ask the Lord - "TEACH ME TO PRAY " (for that specific thing or person or situation, etc.). Then, Be STILL for another minute or so and THE LORD WILL RESPOND giving you the WORDS or PHRASES or SENTENCES or he may even TELL you to DO SOMETHING instead of using words. Whatever it is, the Lord will answer, when you ask him "TEACH ME TO PRAY".
And trust me, the Lord can be humorous on this one too because He may use words or phrases or tell you to speak stuff that you in your own logic and reasoning and understanding would not have thought of for that particular situation. lol. But hey that's just how he is! He LOVES RELATIONSHIP! HE CREATED IT! AND so what better place to learn than from HIM!
Ya'll we BOX our YAHWEH up SO MANY TIMES! We tie him to Sunday services and Model Prayer write-ups! And while those aren't bad per se, I believe He, YESHUA, is truly just longing for us to WALK IN RELATIONSHIP with HIM in EVERY AREA OF OUR LIVES and in EVERY MOMENT of our lives. And even in our PRAYER LIFE too! He doesn't just want to be the RECIPIENT of those prayers ya'll! HE WANTS TO BE A PARTAKER IN THOSE PRAYERS!!!! HE WANTS US TO BE IN 'UNION' WITH HIM SO AT THE END OF THE DAY, WE SPEAK ONE LANGUAGE, AND WITH ONE VOICE - HIS!!!"
So I encourage you, today, right now, just ask Him, "LORD, TEACH ME TO PRAY". And practice doing it!
You all Be Blessed in Yeshua!
Eunice
